Problem
The objective of this project was to push calligraphy beyond its traditional boundaries.

The focus was to:

  • explore large-scale application in an urban, three-dimensional environment

  • challenge conventional ideas of scale, orientation, and surface

  • test how calligraphy behaves within a space defined by movement and perspective

A standard flat surface wouldn’t allow this level of spatial interaction.

Solution
At Freestyle Park Allmend Zurich, I realized a large-scale mural inside a skate bowl, transforming the curved concrete surface into an expressive calligraphy artwork.

  • Approach:
Applying calligraphy across multiple surfaces and scales, directly onto the bowl

  • Adaptation:responding to the bowl’s dynamic geometry
adjusting composition to curves, angles, and depth
creating flow that interacts with movement and viewpoint

This unconventional canvas required:

  • continuous experimentation

  • a flexible and intuitive creative process

allowing the artwork to evolve organically within the environment.

Result

  • A large-scale, site-specific artwork integrated into an urban recreational space

  • Strong interaction between art, architecture, and movement

  • Demonstrates how calligraphy can thrive beyond traditional walls

  • Introduces visual energy and identity into an unexpected environment

👉 The project redefines how calligraphy can exist within public space and spatial design.
